EN 13445 Maintenance Agency
01/09/2022
Overview and organisation of the maintenance agency
EN 13445 series of standards provides rules for the design, fabrication, and inspection of pressure vessels. It provides one means of conforming to essential safety requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU (so-called PED). Through the publication of its reference in the Official Journal of the European Union, it gives presumption of conformity to the essential safety requirements identified in the Annex ZA of each part.
EN 13445 is the key standard in the field of pressure equipment.
The fourth edition of EN 13445 “Unfired pressure vessels” was published in July 2014. The main changes between the 2014 edition and the 2021 edition are detailed in the document : Changes 2014-2021.
EN 13445 is divided into parts which cover the following items :
- General (EN 13445-1)
- Materials (EN 13445-2)
- Design (EN 13445-3)
- Fabrication (EN 13445-4)
- Inspection and testing (EN 13445-5)
- Requirements for the design and fabrication of pressure vessels and pressure parts constructed from spheroidal graphite cast iron (EN 13445-6)
- Additional requirements for pressure vessels of aluminium and aluminium alloys (EN 13445-8)
- Additional requirements for pressure vessels of nickel and nickel alloys (EN 13445-10)
- Examples of the application of EN 13445 to the design and fabrication of an unfired pressure vessel, and to the design of a vertical vessel with bracket supports (referenced CEN/TR 13445-101 and 102)
EN 13445 Maintenance agency acts under the responsibility of the technical committee CEN/TC 54. It is the central point for collecting questions that are addressed either during meetings or by correspondence. When the experts cannot resolve the questions by e-mail, they discuss during the meetings of the maintenance agency for final validation. The answers to the questions are reviewed by the working groups of CEN/TC 54 and submitted to the maintenance agency experts for validation. The applicant is informed whatever the question leads to an action (interpretation, correction or modification) or not.
News and incoming evolution
- The 2021 Edition is available : to get this standard, contact your national standardisation body or buy it on the AFNOR store.
- This new edition is published under the reference EN 13445:2021 (parts 1 to 6, 8 and 10), and incorporates the corrections and amendments to the 2014 edition. Examples of applications: two technical reports published under the references CEN/TR 13445-101 and 102 show respectively an example of application of EN 13445 to the design and fabrication of an unfired pressure vessel, and to the design of a vertical vessel with bracket supports. Part 10 is being finalised. It will deal with nickel and nickel alloy vessels.
2022 Ongoing evolution
- Change of publication mode. One amendment per year per part maximum and consolidation of the amendment to the standard as soon as it is published
- Amendment to part 2
- Amendment to part 3
- Amendment to part 4
- Amendment to part 5
Other topics
- Addition of titanium alloys in part 11
- Addition of copper alloys in part 12
