UNM is the standardization office for mechanical engineering, steel and rubber industries.

Ecosystem UNM VE

The French mechanical engineering industries represent a €115 billion turnover for 11,000 companies hiring more than 10 people. Export sales account for approximately 45% of their turnover, ranking them as the 6th greatest leader in mechanical engineering.

We are in line with the professions’ collective strategies. As collective R&D studies or actions that regulation wise, standardization is a powerful tool for environmental and digital transformation, and on a larger perspective, a tool to promote the vision of professions at the international level.

Since 1977, UNM has progressively spread its expertise, from mechanical engineering industry to rubber, welding, steel industries and more recently, foundry. This expansion was made possible thanks to the trust of the related professions as well as the professional federations, technical centres, suppliers and customers.

In this ecosystem, the stakeholders work closely to develop standards and meet specific needs and challenges faced by these professions: unions, professional federations educate companies on standardization. They set and promote collective strategies in favor of standardization ; technical centres and laboratories develop and test technological solutions. They also lead prenormative studies. On its part, UNM shares its expertise in standardization tools and processes.

FIM, French Federation of Mechanical engineering and metal working industries.

Nowadays, mechanical engineering is at the centre of all the industries: mechanics, transport industry (cars, aeronautics, railway industry, nautical industry), energy production, water supply, building, food processing industries, steel industry, chemistry, military sector… FIM represents the mechanical businesses and gathers 20 national unions. Each provides their expertise for a type of product, market or profession. FIM defends the economic and technical interests of the professions and companies.

Major support from CETIM and CETIAT

The French Technical centres for industries are research centres funded collectively : by the mechanical industries for CETIM and by the heating, air conditioning and air handling industries for CETIAT.
As part of their joint actions, CETIM and CETIAT finance the participation of affiliated experts to UNM national committees. They also finance a large number of CEN and ISO secretariats held by UNM in support of their professions. With UNM, they actively participate in spreading the standardization culture to their industrial communities, particularly through standardization watch actions or webinars.
The technical centres for industries also provide a technical support to the professions. As part of committee meetings, they carry out theoretical or experimental pre-normative actions, the results of which are circulated to the relevant professions to enable them to draw up preliminary drafts of standards.

The Rubber Industry | elanova

The rubber industry in France represents a turnover of about €12 billion achieved by 250 companies (large companies, ETI, SMEs and VSEs). Generating 65% of its turnover from export sales, this industry ranks 2nd in Europe behind Germany. It employs 48,000 people, divided between the manufacture of pneumatic tyres and technical rubber parts.

elanova, the French National Union of Rubber and Polymers is part of the French centre for rubber and polymers (Centre français du caoutchouc et des polymères), which is a multi-skilled centre of expertise for the development of the rubber industry. Besides elanova, this cluster includes the LRCCP (Laboratoire de recherches et de contrôle dans le domaine des caoutchoucs et des plastiques), the IFOCA (Institut de formation initiale et continue aux métiers du caoutchouc), the TNPF (Association professionnelle française des fabricants de pneumatiques) and the FDCA (Fondation du caoutchouc).

elanova finances the participation of its members to the national standardization committees covering rubber, managed by UNM since 2002.

It also leads the Piloting Committee of the UNM Standardization Pole on Rubber, in charge of guiding the work and its financial balance.

Steel and steel industry. A3M/French Steel Federation

A3M represents companies involved in the extraction, production, processing and recycling of metals and industrial minerals.
A3M, Alliance des Minerais, Minéraux et Métaux, is the result of an alliance between the FEDEM (French Federation of ores, industrial minerals and non-ferrous metals) and the FFA (French Steel Federation).
A3M/FFA finances the participation of its members to the national standardization committees covering steel [lien vers page 1.4], managed by UNM since 2017. It also finances UNM-held secretariats at CEN and ISO level.
It also leads the Piloting Committee of the UNM Standardization Pole on Steel, in charge of guiding the work and its financial balance.
