Of the 850 standards harmonised with these regulations, 560 are monitored and managed by UNM.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It encapsulates technical and regulatory requirements for the design of machinery, with the sole purpose of ensuring the safety of operators. Harmonised standards are developed by standardisation bodies and are a means of complying with the essential requirements of these regulations.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cMachinery\u201d Regulation has just been adopted by the Council as a revision of the Machinery Directive 2006\/42\/EC, and UNM is more than ever involved in the process of revising the collection of \u201cMachinery\u201d standards.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-137993d e-con-full e-flex e-con free movement of goods is a cornerstone of the European single market. The mechanisms in place to achieve this objective are based on the prevention of new barriers to trade, mutual recognition and technical harmonisation. The new approach to technical harmonisation and standardisation is based on the following principles set out in the 1985 Council Resolution:<\/p><ul><li>Harmonisation is limited to essential requirements,<\/li><li>Only products that meet the essential requirements may be placed on the market and put into service,<\/li><li><strong>Harmonised standards<\/strong>, the reference numbers of which have been published in the Official Journal and which have been transposed into national standards, <strong>are presumed to comply with the corresponding essential requirements<\/strong>,<\/li><li><strong>The application of<\/strong> harmonised standards or other technical specifications is <strong>left to the discretion of manufacturers <\/strong>, who are free to choose any technical solution that guarantees compliance with the essential requirements,<\/li><li>Manufacturers can choose between different conformity assessment procedures provided for in the applicable directive.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ad3040 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"3ad3040\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"B\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b8b3a71 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"b8b3a71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b0a026 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1b0a026\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Harmonised standards <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f968258 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f968258\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p class=\"Rsum1repage\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">A &#8220;harmonised standard&#8221; is a European standard adopted by one of the European standardisation bodies &#8211; CEN, CENELEC and ETSI &#8211; on the basis of a request for standardisation submitted by the European Commission. Products that comply with harmonised standards or parts thereof and whose references have been published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) will be deemed to comply with the requirements covered by the standards in question. Any harmonised standard whose reference has been published in the OJEU gives a presumption of conformity with the Directive it supports.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div><p class=\"Rsum1repage\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Harmonised standards contain an Annex ZA which establishes the link between the Essential Requirements of the Directive and the requirements of the standard.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-289ac12 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"289ac12\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Safety of machinery standards <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c7e65a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c7e65a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three types of safety of machinery standards:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Type-A standards <\/strong>(basic safety standards) giving basic concepts, principles for design and general aspects that can be applied to machinery,<\/li><li><strong>Type-B standards <\/strong>(generic safety standards) dealing with one safety aspect or one type of safeguard that can be used across a wide range of machinery,<\/li><li><strong>Type-B1<\/strong> <strong>standards<\/strong> on particular safety aspects (for example, safety distances, surface temperature, noise)<\/li><li><strong>Type-B2 standards<\/strong>, (for example, two-hand controls, interlocking devices, pressure-sensitive devices, guards),<\/li><li><strong>Type-C standards <\/strong>(machine safety standards) dealing with detailed safety requirements for a particular machine or group of machines.<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a particular safety requirement (e.g. emergency stop), Type C standards refer to the Type B standard, which covers this requirement for all machines.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c3f08a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"c3f08a9\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Revision of the \u201cMachinery\u201d Directive into the \u201cMachinery\u201d Regulation<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7fcf74d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7fcf74d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Commission proposed the draft of the new \u201cMachinery\u201d Regulation in April 2021.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several reasons for this revision:<\/p><ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><li>Ensuring consistency with the EU legislative framework for products<\/li><li>Providing provisions for high-risk machines<\/li><li>Covering the new risks associated with new technologies<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new \u201cMachinery\u201d Regulation has just been adopted by the Council.
